Introduction:
Hey, I am Miranda with REI. Rope management is an essential skill for climbers, ensuring safety, efficiency, and longevity of your gear. Today, I’m going to share a few different techniques I use to coil my climbing rope, from the classic Butterfly coil to a convenient backpack coil. Let’s dive in!
Rope Coiling Techniques:
- Butterfly Coil:
- To begin, flake out your rope on the ground.
- Start with both ends, pulling out an armspan of rope, and drop it over your shoulder.
- Continue coiling until you reach the end of the rope.
- Wrap the coils up and secure with a bight of rope.
- This method is great for storage, with the option to hang your rope with a carabiner.
- Compact Carry Coil:
- Start from one end of the rope and coil it over your shoulder.
- When you have an armspan of rope left, create a bight and wrap the rope around the coils.
- Feed the loose end through the loop and secure.
- Ideal for carrying your rope from crag to crag, allowing easy access while keeping it secure on your pack.
- Backpack Coil:
- Start with both ends of the rope together, pulling out two arms lengths of rope.
- Finish coiling the rest over your shoulders.
- Wrap the rope up and secure with a bight of rope.
- Wear the coil like a backpack for convenient transport, securing the loose ends with an overhand knot.
Conclusion:
These are just a few of the ways you can coil your climbing rope, each serving a different purpose depending on your needs. Practice these techniques to find what works best for you and remember, proper rope management is key to a successful climbing experience.
